Chung Mong-ik was born in 1962 as the second son of KCC founder and honorary chairman Chung Sang-yung, the youngest brother of Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung.
He went to Yongsan High School and earned a master’s degree in international finance at George Washington University, before joining the family business in 1989.
He and his brothers inherited control of the group from their father in 2000: Mong-jin, the eldest, as the overall manager; Mong-ik as the president and CEO of fine chemical division; and the youngest Mong-nyul in charge of the constructions arm of the group.
Chung is credited for successfully guiding the company as the leader in building materials industry. He is also the owner of professional basketball team Jeonju KCC Egis.
He married Choi Eun-jeong, niece of Lotte founder and honorary chairman Shin Kyuk-ho, and has three children.
