Born in 1955, Professor Kim Sun-young is the founder and current chief security officer of biotechnology company ViroMed, based in Seoul, Korea.
Kim received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology at Seoul National University and continued with his master’s degree in bioengineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S. He earned his doctorate degree at Oxford University in molecular genetics.
Upon completing his studies, Kim was a postdoctoral fellow at Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research at MIT and served as an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.
He is now a professor at Seoul National University since 1992.
In November 1996, he founded ViroMedica Pacific, at his Seoul National University lab with two graduate students, becoming the university’s first venture business. The company’s name changed to ViroMed in 1999.
The company is regarded as a pioneer in the field of gene therapy, a rapidly growing field of medicine for the treatment of diseases.
