Cho was born in 1939 in Hwanghae Province in North Korea. He majored in architectural engineering at Seoul National University.
In 1970, he started small in a 23-square meter vinyl greenhouse, with an ambitious aim to make the lives of Korean housewives better by changing the kitchen that centered on a furnace.
In three decades, Hanssem grew to the top interior company, expanding the business to all the spaces in houses, leading the changes of overall living environment in Korea. More recently, he branched out into kitchen appliances, and diversified distribution channels to online and TV shopping channels.
His two brothers helped him before establishing their own businesses of importing furniture in 2004 and 2006, respectively.
In 2010, he sidestepped from management and became honorary president.
He is known to have keen interest in art and architecture enough to run a private company devoted to design and art.
He has three daughters, the second of whom is working at the company’s U.S. branch. He had a son who briefly worked at Hanssem in the early 2000s. He died in 2012.
