[THE INVESOTR] Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics, has recently ceased production of transparent organic light-emitting diode displays(OLED) possibly due to still-low marketability.

The display manufacturer rolled out the futuristic displays at a production facility located in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, with the prototypes displayed at such locations as BMW’s driving center on Incheon’s Yeongjongdo Island. 

“The V1 production line is mainly used for research and development projects for experimental products. The company has not decided yet on what the production line will be used for,” a Samsung Display public relations representative said.

Industry watchers have predicted the production line could be replaced with those for smaller OLED displays, which has seen demand soaring upon increasing adoption from smartphone-makers, including Apple.

Samsung Display first showcased a 55-inch (139.7 centimeters) transparent OLED display at a retail trade fair in Hong Kong in June 2015.

The transparent OLED boasts a 45 percent penetration rate, full high-definition resolution and 100 percent color reproduction rate -- compared to the 10 percent penetration rate and 70-color reproduction rate of liquid crystal displays.

The latest move regarding the transparent displays is in line with the increasing demand for small and medium-sized OLED displays for mobile devices.

More global smartphone-makers are increasingly adopting OLED displays for their flagships products as the self-luminous displays are more power efficient and boast better picture quality than conventional LCDs.
