THE INVESTOR] South Korea’s Ministry of Environment will soon announce its decision on Audi Volkswagen Korea’s recall plan affecting 125,000 diesel cars fitted with emissions-rigging software devices, industry sources said on Nov. 22.
In October, the Korean unit of the German carmaker submitted its fourth recall plan to the ministry following its three failed attempts in January, March and June, due to insufficient data and for not admitting the use of the cheat software devices.
In the latest plan, the company admitted it cheated the emissions tests, saying they “installed the software that operates in two different modes depending on the driving condition.”
Sources said the ministry is highly likely to OK the proposed plan this time and order a recall to replace the software, more than a year after the Volkswagen scandal broke out globally in September 2015.
“An announcement could come next week,” said a source on condition of anonymity.
In the meantime, the ministry is expected to announce a separate inspection result of certification documents of all 23 foreign carmakers within the month.
