[THE INVESTOR] Korean Electronics and telecom carriers are fiercely competing to take the leadership in 5th generation mobile networks, or 5G, viewing it as the next-generation technology.

5G, which transmits data 20 times faster than 4G, is expected to be a platform enabling growth in information technology, automobiles, entertainment and manufacturing industries.

LG Electronics said on Dec. 4 it demonstrated Frequency Division Duplex, or FDR, for the first time in the world in partnership with Yonsei University.

FDR is a strong candidate communication technology of 5G standard for significantly raising data transmission speed. It is capable of raising the frequency efficiency up to double the current Frequency Division Duplex, LG Electronics said.

“We will continue to strengthen 5G competitiveness through the leadership in FDR technology, which is expected to become a major standard for 5G,” said Kwak Kook-yeon, a chief of LG Electronics‘ next-generation standard research division.

The nation’s largest mobile carrier SK Telecom is also striving to be the leader in 5G technology.

SK Telecom is currently the only Korean mobile carrier, which joined 5G Global Partners, a global organization comprised of 15 tech companies including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung Electronics set up to improve 5G network services.

The mobile carrier said it recently proposed technical standard in terms of data transmission, virtual network and data reaction speed and service customized network to 5G Global Partners. The proposals were adopted by global collaborative project 3rd Generation Partnership Project.

The nation‘s second largest mobile carrier KT is also spurring the development of 5G technology.

KT is slated to showcase its 5G pilot service during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and commercialize it in 2019.

KT chairman Hwang Chang-gyu had said during the Mobile World Congress held in February, “A year ago, there was a doubt over whether a Korean company could make 5G available. However, things turned around as we showcased 5G pilot service during this event.”  Hwang is expected to further promote the company’s vision while attending next year’s MWC as a key note speaker.

KT is slated to showcase 360-degree VR and hologram live through the 5G service for the first time in the world during the Olympic.
