[THE INVESTOR] LG Electronics said on Dec. 5 that it plans to withdraw all complaints against UK vacuum cleaner maker Dyson for disparaging its products.

The Korean tech giant filed a lawsuit at the Seoul Central District Court in April, accusing Dyson of unfair business practices and breaching fair trade and advertising laws. It also filed a separate complaint at the Fair Trade Commission, the antitrust watchdog, for unfair business practices.

The suits came after Dyson held an event in February, called the Performance Comparison Event, during which its company officials demonstrated the suction power of its high-end models by comparing them with LG’s mid-range and low-end cleaners.

Right after the event, LG officially complained to Dyson founder James Dyson and CEO Max Conze, demanding an apology for misleading consumers. But the top executives did not accept the request.

It was not the first time that the two firms have been involved in a feud.

In October last year, LG filed an injunction against Dyson in Australia for false advertising.

LG accused Dyson of misleading consumers by claiming, in its ads that the Dyson V6 vacuum cleaner is “the most powerful cordless vacuum,” and boats “twice the suction power of any cordless vacuum.” The suction power of LG’s cordless vacuum cleaner Cyking is in fact twice that of the V6, according to LG.

After Dyson accepted LG’s request to stop the ads, the Korean company dropped its suit.

“LG will not sit back and just watch other firms damage the brand image of LG through unfair business practices,” an LG official said.
