[THE INVESTOR] GM Korea is expected to launch the new Cruze compact car in January in efforts to further expand its presence here, according to industry sources on Dec. 12.

GM Korea has already enjoyed brisk sales of some of its models, including the All New Malibu midsize sedan, with its local market share expected to breach the 10 percent mark for the first time in nearly a decade.

In the first 11 months of the year, GM Korea’s market share here stood at 9.9 percent, just shy of 10 percent that would mark the company’s first double-digit market share since 2009.

Such an increase in sales was partly attributed to brisk sales of the Malibu, which has already sold more than 30,000 units, compared with 16,382 units sold in all of 2015.

“The new Cruze may help GM Korea further expand its market share here, and compete with Hyundai Motor’s Avante and Kia Motors’ K3,” an industry source said.

In the January-September period, the Chevrolet Cruze sold 7,614 units, down nearly 40 percent from 12,654 cars sold over the same period last year, according to data from GM Korea.
