[THE INVESTOR] Kakao said on Dec. 15 that it would complete its work to combine two video streaming services -- Daum TV Pot and Kakao TV -- by February next year.

Daum TV Pot, available on web portal Daum, offers video content, such as TV dramas and shows, in collaboration with TV broadcasters, content firms and individuals who run their own online broadcasting channels.

Kakao TV is a mobile video streaming platform which offers video content that can be readily shared through mobile messenger KakaoTalk.

The new video streaming service will be named Kakao TV, which the company said would help users to enjoy watching videos without a hitch on the firm’s various platforms, including KakaoTalk, Daum and Pot Player.

The mobile messenger firm will also roll out Video Station on which users can upload videos and livestream to make money off them.

“The new video platform Kakao TV, which will make it easy to create, circulate, and manage videos for users, will have a competitive edge over other rivals,” said Bae Dong-ho, a director from Kakao’s video platform team.

The Pangyo-based firm will hold a meeting to explain the new video service to its partners.

The amalgamation between the two video services is in line with Kakao’s drive to streamline its services sprawled in its web portal and mobile platforms.

In recent months, Kakao has changed the names of some services to highlight its mobile-oriented business strategies, for example, from Daum Map to Kakao Map.

The firm has also suspended some of its services, including mobile messenger MyPeople, streaming music service Daum Music and cloud storage service Daum Cloud.
