[THE INVESTOR] Korean display maker LG Display has teamed up with global smartphone makers Apple, Google and Microsoft to develop flexible organic light-emitting diode displays for smartphones that fold outward, according to a news report on Dec. 16.

The Korean display maker will mass-produce the foldable display by 2018 and supply it to the firms, which are forecast to release foldable smartphones around that time, technology news outlet ETnews reported.

A prototype of the OLED display that can fold outward is said to have been already produced. LG Display declined to comment.

The news came as speculations are mounting in recent months that smartphone makers, including Samsung Electronics, could release their foldable smartphones anytime soon.

Samsung has already showcased a smartphone prototype with a display folding inward at the CES trade show in Las Vegas in 2014.

LG Electronics, whose smartphone business has been suffering from a huge operating loss, has belatedly jumped on the bandwagon to develop the foldable smartphones together with the display business arm of LG Group, according to the news report.

If it is confirmed that Apple is actually going to go ahead with plans for rolling out a foldable smartphone, it will signal a new round of battle between the US tech giant and Samsung in the near future.
