[THE INVESTOR] BMW Korea unveiled short action film “The Escape” at a special screening in Seoul last week.

The latest flick marks the return of the hit action series “The Hire,” launched by the German luxury automaker in 2001.

The critically acclaimed series of eight short films, produced by BMW Films, starred Clive Owens (“Closer,” “Children of Men”) playing a hired driver behind the BMW vehicles and helmed by A-list directors such as Ang Lee, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Tony Scott, among others.

Owen reprises his famous role “The Driver” in the latest action-packed film that was created in homage to the 15th anniversary of the original series. “The Escape” is written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, who is behind “District 9” and “Elysium,” and features Hollywood stars Dakota Fanning, Vera Farmiga and Jon Bernthal.

The rebooted series is entertaining and exciting, as Owen drives a sleek BMW 540i sedan through gunfire, explosions with a mission to protect the last living clone Lily, played by Fanning. The car even brings down a helicopter.

The latest seventh-generation 5-series, BMW’s longest-running model line, will go on sale in Korea in February next year. It boasts a refreshed exterior and interior design and advanced technology, as well as a lighter weight but stronger performance.

“Blomkamp created this film with a thorough understanding of the previous installments,” Kim Tae-hoon, a cultural critic said at the screening. “He used familiar themes and scenes from the past series, such as hostage, helicopter, bridge, truck and container, and artfully crafted into a new form.”

“The film is part of BMW’s effort to flourish and enrich culture,” a BMW official said after the screening. “We expect to see more film series in the future.”

“The Escape,” at 11 minutes, is available for streaming on BMW Films’ website and YouTube.
