[THE INVESTOR] Huawei P9, the Chinese handset maker’s first premium smartphone to hit the Korean market, has sold less than 1,000 units since its launch early this month, industry sources said on Dec. 19.

The phone’s daily sales stand at about 50 units, a tiny figure compared to more than 10,000 units sold per day by its top-tier rivals such as Samsung Galaxy S7 and Apple iPhone 7.

LG Uplus, the nation’s No. 3 telecom carrier, is the phone’s sole vendor here.

Sources attributed the phone’s lukewarm sales to its relatively less premium features.

“The P9’s key features such as camera, memory, processor and display miss expectations of tech-savvy customers here,” an official of a local telecom carrier said on condition of anonymity.

“Most specifications are two to three years behind the latest smartphones of Samsung and LG.”

The P9 debuted in April globally. For the belated Korean launch, Huawei drastically lowered the price to 599,500 won (US$514) for the base model and 699,600 won for the large-screen model, almost half of their European prices.
