[THE INVESTOR]  Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun on Jan.3 has left for Las Vegas to attend the annual Consumer Electronics Show.

It is Chung’s third straight year attending the world’s largest tech trade show that runs from Jan. 5-8. The Hyundai heir will oversee the automaker’s prsence at the CES as it demonstrates future car technologies, including unveiling the Ioniq autonomous EV, among others.

He will join heads of global carmakers, including Ford CEO Mark Fields and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, at the CES, highlighting the convergence between tech and the automotive industry.

Hyundai plans to hold a press conference and set up a booth at the CES, promoting its auto connectivity, green cars and mobility.

During the US trip, Chung is expected to meet key executives of the Hyundai Motor America, including Jerry Flannery, the interim-CEO who replaced Dave Zuchowski in December. Chung will review the business performance and share future strategies in the all-important US market to regain market share amid slumping sales.

Chung, however, will not attend the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, better known as Detroit Auto Show, which is slated to kick off on Jan. 8. Last year, Chung gave a presentation at the auto show as it launched luxury Genesis G90 sedan in the US. This year, Hyundai, however, is not planning on holding a press conference.

Chung’s US trip marks South Korea’s largest automaker’s emphasis on the US market, as well as China, which he visited in the end-December. The two markets combined make up half of the auto giant’s sales.

Last year, Hyundai Motor Group -- which includes Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors -- missed its 2016 sales target, selling only some 7.88 million cars globally, a 1.7 percent drop on-year.

This year the auto giant has set its sales target at 8.25 million cars.
