[THE INVESTOR] Kim & Chang was crowned the top merger and acquisition legal advisor in South Korea, advising on over 10 trillion (US$8.37 billion) of deals in 2016, according to data by Market Insight on Jan. 11

Kim & Chang regained its top spot, winning for the third time in the last four years after losing it to Bae, Kim & Lee, also known as BKL, in the 2015 league tables.

The law firm worked on an aggregated 10.56 trillion won of 55 M&A deals including last year’s mega deals -- sale of Hyundai Securities, HP acquisition of Samsung’s printing business and other mid-market transactions.

Shin & Kim, Lee & Ko and BKL came in second, third and fourth, respectively in the ranking.

Shin & Kim advised on a total of 31 M&A deals worth 8.59 trillion won including working with Kakao on the 1.9 trillion takeover of Loen Entertainment and Logen on its transaction by CVC capital Partners.

The busiest legal advisor for initial public offerings was BKL by both deal volume and count by consulting on last year’s biggest share sale Samsung BioLogics, Doosan Bobcat, Daelim CNS and Yong Pyong Resort.

BLK was followed by two New York-headquartered law firms -- Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton -- which jointly ranked second.
