Seoul shares open stronger on Jan. 12

[THE INVESTOR] South Korean shares opened slightly higher on Jan.12, riding on the coattails of advances by large caps and overnight gains on Wall Street.

The benchmark KOSPI added 5.02 points, or 0.24 percent, to 2,080.19 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Most large caps were in positive terrain while top cap Samsung Electronics gained 0.16 percent, one day after it reached a record high of 1,914,000 won (US$1,620).

Global chipmaker SK hynix plunged 1.16 percent, but top portal operator Naver spiked 1.39 percent.

Leading automaker Hyundai Motor added 0.34 percent, while top steelmaker POSCO advanced 0.93 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,181.20 won against the US dollar, up 15.20 won from the previous session’s close.
