[THE INVESTOR] The global material market for organic light-emitting diode panels is expected to exceed 1 trillion won (US$980 million) this year as display makers, especially those in China, are beefing up production recently, UBI Research, a local research firm specialized in OLED, said on Jan. 17.

The OLED material market saw a 15 percent growth to US$650 million last year compared to a year ago.

“Despite falling prices of raw materials, the OLED material market continued to grow last year due to the increased production by Samsung Display and LG Display,” a UBI analyst said.

“In 2017, demands for materials will further increase as the two leading firms start operation of new production lines.”

Samsung Display dominates more than 97 percent of the OLED market for smartphones and mobile devices, while LG Display is a leading player in OLED TVs.

The analyst stressed that material makers need to pay attention to Chinese display makers that are increasingly producing OLED panels even though they are still in their infancy.

“Material companies should focus on Chinese sales for growth,” he added.

According to UBI, Samsung SDI topped the OLED material sales in 2016, followed by Japan’s Idemisu Kosan and UDC of the US.
