[
THE INVESTOR] LS Cable and Systems, a major cable manufacturer in Korea, has started to supply magnet wires to General Motors for the US carmaker’s electric vehicle Chevrolet Bolt.
It is the first time for a Korean company to supply the wire products to foreign EV makers, the company based in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, said on Feb. 2.
Magnet wire is an insulated copper electrical conductor used in motors. Wires used for EVs should be resistant to sudden voltage surge and heat which requires high level of technology in making. Such wires designed to activate motors of EVs safely have been dominated by Japanese manufacturers so far.
But LS, as the first Korean firm, has succeeded in commercializing wires capable of resisting 10 times higher voltage than regular copper wires, an official said. The company has also adopted rectangular wire, not round wire, to reduce noise and size of the products.
The wire will be supplied to
LG Electronics which has been supplying EV motors to GM, but LS was registered as an official vendor to GM last year.
The company will look for business opportunities in the EV market in the future, the official said, mentioning that Tesla is scheduled to make a market debut here this year.
