[THE INVESTOR] The sales of eco-friendly cars in South Korea jumped last month, aided by strong demand for hybrid vehicles, industry data showed on Feb. 13.

According to the data, a total of 4,237 eco-friendly vehicles, such as hybrid cars and electric vehicles, were sold in South Korea last month, compared with 2,979 units a year earlier.

The sharp increase was led mainly by Kia Motors, South Korea’s No. 2 automaker. The company sold a total of 1,795 eco-friendly cars in the country last month, a sharp increase from 630 units sold a year earlier. Kia’s best-selling eco-friendly car was the Niro hybrid with 973 units sold last month, followed by the K7 hybrid with 636 units.

In contrast, Hyundai Motor, Kia’s larger affiliate, suffered a setback in its domestic sales of eco-friendly cars. The automaker sold a total of 973 eco-friendly autos last month, a downturn from 1,674 units posted a year earlier.

Market sources said demand for eco-friendly cars will remain firm here down the road, as automakers are set to unveil new models, such as the Niro PHEV. Also, the government is committed to encouraging more people to drive eco-friendly vehicles as part of efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and generate new growth momentum for its auto industry.
