[THE INVESTOR] French media and entertainment company Technicolor on Feb. 15 filed several patent infringement suits against Samsung Electronics across a range of the Korean tech giant’s smartphones and TVs.

In the suits filed in Germany and France, the French firm claimed Samsung has infringed its 10 patents related to video coding, telecommunications and other associated technologies.

“After extensive negotiations to reach a fair agreement, the group is now taking action to protect itself and defend the value of its intellectual property,” Technicolor said in a statement, hinting that related talks with Samsung have failed.

The firm said it owns over 30,000 patents and patent applications in the areas of video coding and image processing, telecommunications, user experience, security and displays, adding that it is investing more than 100 million euros (US$106 million) annually in research and development.

The firm didn’t specify its conditions to settle the case, including damage compensation.
