[THE INVESTOR] French media and entertainment company Technicolor has recently filed several patent infringement suits against Samsung Electronics in France and Germany, seeking compensation for damages.

The Paris-based firm, a specialist in improving picture quality of liquid-crystal displays, claimed Samsung has infringed its 10 patents related to video coding, telecommunications and other technologies.

“We are seeking both monetary damages and orders that will halt any further infringement of our patents,” Megel Emilie, an investor relations official of Technicolor, told The Investor on Feb. 17 via email.

She declined to name the specific products, saying the infringements were found across a range of Samsung smartphones and TVs.

In an earlier press release on Feb. 15, the firm hinted related talks with Samsung failed to reach an agreement. The Technicolor official refused to comment on more detailed conditions to settle the case.

“We are evaluating the situation. No other suits have been filed at this time,” she added about plans to file similar suits in Samsung’s other key markets such as the US and China.

Technicolor said it owns over 30,000 patents and patent applications in the areas of video coding and image processing, telecommunications, user experience, security and displays. Its annual spending on research and development reaches more than 100 million euros (US$106 million).

A Samsung spokesperson said the firm would take follow-up measures after reviewing the case.

Samsung and Technicolor are members of an industry-wide technological alliance for ultra-high definition TVs. More recently, companies are increasingly teaming up for high dynamic range, the next-generation home video content after the current 4K.
