[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Motor and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors topped the Israeli car market last year, outpacing Toyota Motor and other Japanese rivals, industry data found on Feb. 19.

Hyundai sold 39,086 units in the market, regaining the top spot in three years. Kia, the best-selling brand in 2015, came in second with sales of 38,069 vehicles.

Hyundai and Kia make up 13.6 percent and 13.3 percent of the market, respectively.

Toyota came in third with shipments of 30,040 vehicles, followed by Skoda with 19,511 and Mitsubishi with 17,988.

Israel has emerged as one of the top three auto markets in the Middle East. The market expanded 12.5 percent on-year.

“Hyundai‘s Sonata hybrid has been dominating the Israeli market for mid-size sedans,” a Hyundai official said. “Hyundai and Kia have also taken the initiative in the hybrid market by debuting such models as the Niro and the Ioniq.”
