[THE INVESTOR] The number of people employed by large corporations dropped significantly in January on-year, data showed on Feb. 20.

According to Statistics Korea, the number of people employed by large corporations – those with more than 300 workers – decreased by 46,000 from the same month last year to come in at 2.416 million. This is the largest drop since September 2010.

The changes are thought to have been caused in part by the manufacturing sector’s difficulties. Buffeted by economic slowdown, and local shipbuilders’ restructuring, the number of jobs in the manufacturing sector fell by 160,000 last month.

The presidential scandal, in which a number of conglomerates have been implicated, appears likely to dampen large firms’ employment further.

In contrast, the number of those employed at businesses with four or less workers increased 122,000 over the same period. This is the largest on-year increase since august 2014. The number of workers at businesses with more than five but less than 299 employees showed an on-year increase of 167,000 in January.
