[THE INVESTOR] BMW Korea CEO Kim Hyo-joon on Feb. 21 expressed confidence in selling more than 20,000 units of the revamped 5 Series sedan this year, calling securing more orders from the German headquarters key to meeting the sales goal.

“Because the 5 Series is a hot-seller around the world, it is not easy to secure enough cars,” he told reporters at the launch event held in Seoul. “I plan to visit Germany again to ask for more cars. All the 5 Series cars will be shipped directly from Germany.”

Kim, who has been leading the Korean unit since 2000, was appointed on Feb. 10 to serve another three-year term. In 2003, he became an executive at the German head office, the first for an Asian. In 2013, he was promoted to senior vice president.

According to him, the 5 Series has already sold more than 4,000 units through preorders that started on Jan. 4.

The new 5 Series comes with a revamped sleek styling and high-tech features, such as a self-driving system. The prices range between 66.3 million won (US$56,162) and 87.9 million won depending on trims.
