THE INVESTOR] South Korean shares opened higher on Feb. 22, tracking gains on Wall Street ahead of this week‘s rate decision in Seoul.
The benchmark KOSPI rose 1.56 points, or 0.07 percent, to 2,104.49 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
The main index tracked overnight gains on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.58 percent, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index climbing 0.47 percent.
On Feb. 23, the Bank of Korea will decide whether to raise its interest rate, with experts forecasting a freeze.
Most large-cap stocks were mixed across the board. Top cap
Samsung Electronics gained 0.62 percent, and No. 2 chipmaker
SK hynix. was up 1.18 percent.
Top automaker
Hyundai Motor fell 1.32 percent, and top steelmaker
POSCO was down 0.35 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,139.95 won against the US dollar, up 6.15 won from the previous session’s close.
