[THE INVESTOR] Sales of imported beers are set to overtake local brands at large supermarket chains, data showed on Feb. 26.

According to E-mart, imported products accounted for 51.7 percent of beer sales between Feb. 1 and Feb. 23, overtaking local brands for the first time.

Along with E-mart, Homeplus’ imported beers is said to have broken the 50 percent mark this month, while the figure for Lotte Mart has fallen just short of the mark at 47.4 percent.

The increase in popularity of imported brews has been attributed to the increase in single- and two-person households that feed the trend of drinking alone or at home.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, households comprising of one or two people numbered 11.91 million or about 56.1 percent of the total at the end of September 2016.
