[THE INVESTOR] Renault Samsung, the Korean unit of French automaker Renault Group, on March 16 said it will release two-seater electric vehicle Twizy in June, with plans to sell 1,000 units this year.

The announcement came on the eve of the 4th International Electric Vehicle Expo that runs from March 17-23 at the Yeonmiji Botanic Garden of Jungmun Resort on Jeju Island.

“We will lead the expansion of the EV market by introducing a diverse lineup of cars, including a mini car and a 1-ton commercial vehicle,” said Kim Jin-ho, Renault Samsung director overseeing light commercial vehicle and EV division.

Compact Twizy has a range of 100 kilometers per single charge, with maximum speed reaching 80 kilometers per hour.

The vehicle can be plugged into any 220V power outlet to charge it conveniently. The price, which starts at 15.5 million won (US$13715.33), will drop below 4.7 million won when the government subsidies are added.

At the event, Renault Samsung also announced its plan to sell 1,000 units of its fully electric sedan SM3 Z.E this year.

The automaker is also developing a 1-ton electric light truck that drives up to 250 kilometers on a single charge, with plans to complete the project by 2019.
