[THE INVESTOR] Hanwha has won a US$1.3 billion order to build the largest solar energy plant in Turkey, according to news reports on March 21.

Hanwha Q Cells’ solar power plant in Burdur, Turkey

Hanwha Q Cells formed a 50-50 consortium with Turkey’s Kalyon Enerji and won the bid for the 1 gigawatt project in Konya, beating three other candidates.

The South Korean solar cell manufacturer is a global leader and has been building plants in Turkey including the one in Burdur, the largest in the country as of 2016.

It will be a revolutionary step for the country’s energy sector and a threshold in shifting toward new renewable energy, said Turkish Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, who is also the son-in-law of president. He recently remarked that the plant will have a 15-year purchase guarantee without any currency risks.
