[THE INVESTOR] Renault Samsung Motors, the Korean unit of French automaker Renault Group, on March 29 denied speculation that the carmaker is considering producing the Twizy electric car in Daegu, some 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

“Nothing has been decided on producing Twizy in Daegu or other locations in Korea,” a spokesperson from Renault Samsung told The Investor. “It’s too early to decide whether Twizy will be manufactured in Korea. The car has to go on sale first and then we will decide if we will start local production.”

On the previous day, local media ETnews reported Renault Samsung is considering manufacturing its two-seater EV in Daegu, where the automaker formed a consortium with local firms to build electric trucks by 2019.

But according to Renault Samsung, Twizy that will go on sale starting June, will be entirely shipped from France. Once the carmaker kicks off sales, it will decide whether to build Twizy cars in the country, with its current Busan plant as the most likely spot.

The Twizy compact has a range of 100 kilometers per single charge, with maximum speed reaching 80 kilometers per hour. The vehicle can be plugged into any 220V power outlet to charge it conveniently. The price, which starts at 15.5 million won (US$13,715.33), will drop below 4.7 million won when the government subsidies are added.

Renault Samsung said it plans to sell 1,000 units of Twizy this year.
