[THE INVESTOR] Hotel Shilla announced on April 5 that it has been granted permission to operate a duty-free store at Hong Kong Chek Kap Kok International Airport.

It has won the license for fragrance and cosmetics, and fashion and accessories divisions at the airport until September 2024, and plans to unveil the store by the end of this year.

The hotel and duty-free business affiliate of Samsung has become the first to manage duty-free stores in three largest airports in Asia, as it already has presence in Incheon and Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Hotel Shilla has been pursuing global expansion since 2011 and reaped 500 billion won (US$444.48 million) revenue overseas last year, the largest among South Korean duty-free operators. “By securing the license for this airport where 70.5 million tourists visited last year, we have procured a global structure that can make over 1 trillion won in overseas sales,” said a company official.

The company is further expanding its presence overseas. It opened a downtown duty-free store in Phuket, Thailand in November 2016 and will open another in Tokyo on April 27 -- a joint operation with Japanese retail giant Takashimaya and an affiliate of All Nippon Airways.
