[THE INVESTOR] SsangYong Motor, owned by India’s auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra, on April 6 said it will reinstate 60 laid-off workers to meet the production demand for its new flagship SUV G4 Rexton.
The automaker said the management and its labor union have reached an agreement to bring back the dismissed workers prior to releasing G4 Rexton in the market. The automaker will conduct job interviews this week and necessary on-job training, with plans to place the workers at the assembly lines by early May.

This is the third time SsangYong has rehired its workers since the carmaker let go of around 2,600 employees in 2009 amid restructuring efforts. In 2013, the automaker reinstated 454 workers who were on unpaid leave as its business began to regain traction, and in February last year another 40 following the launch of its popular Tivoli compact.
SsangYong has pinned high hopes on its new large SUV G4 Rexton to continue its recent sales momentum at home and abroad, while regaining its past glory in the SUV segment.
The G4 Rexton made its world premiere at the Seoul Auto Show on March 30. The car is expected to hit the market in the first half of this year, while the exact date and specifications are still under wraps.
