[THE INVESTOR] Korean auto parts maker Mando Mando has set up a new office in Silicon Valley, as it moves to speed up developing autonomous car technology.

Mando Innovation Silicon Valley opened on May 24 (US local time), with Chung Mong-won, chairman of its parent group Halla Group, Mando CEO Sung Il-mo and Vice President Tak Il-hwan, attending the official launching event.

Halla Group Chairman Chung Mong-won speaks with Robert Seidl, managing partner of Motus Ventures, at Mando Innovation Silicon Valley opening.

“We will do our best to take a leading part in the future auto technology industry through partnership with various global firms in Silicon Valley and obtain advanced technology,” Sung was quoted as saying.

The newly established branch will play a key role in connecting Mando’s global network, including its R&D headquarters in Korea as well as Germany, China and India. It will also expand Mando’s partnership with local tech firms and startups in the all-important US market. The company is moving to diversify its client base that is heavily reliant on Hyundai Motor -- which accounts for about 50 percent sales.

Mando is ramping up its R&D in future car technologies. It recently gained approval from the Transport Ministry to test a self-driving car on the road.
