[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Motor on June 7 said it has tied up with Chinese tech-giant Baidu to equip AI-powered technologies in vehicles sold in the world’s largest auto market.

Hyundai and Baidu have jointly developed a real-time navigation system Baidu MapAuto and Duer OS Auto, Baidu’s speed recognition digital assistant, with plans to launch a new car that is equipped with two systems later this year. The automaker announced its plans at the CES Asia in Shanghai.

Hyundai said it is considering to expand partnership with Baidu for AI, connected cars and autonomous technology to take the upper hand in connected car industry.

“Future cars are an opportunity to produce new value and possibilities,” Yang Woong-chul, Hyundai Motor vice chairman, said at the press event during the CES Asia. “We will further strengthen partnership with Baidu for the development of connected cars.”

At the ongoing CES Asia 2017, the regional event of the world’s largest consumer electronics trade show, Hyundai showcased a Santa Fe SUV equipped with the MapAuto and Duer OS Auto systems at the Baidu booth.

Their tie-up dates back to 2015 when Hyundai became the first automaker to install Baidu’s CarLife –- a China-specific in-car infotainment system –- in its vehicles.
