[THE INVESTOR] Korea’s overall consumer sentiment hit a six-year high in June, central bank data showed on June 27.

The composite consumer sentiment index for June came to 111.1, up from 108 a month earlier, according to data from the Bank of Korea. The June figure marked the highest since January 2011 when the index stood at 111.4. A reading above 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.

Outbound shipments came to US$45 billion in May, up from US$39.7 billion tallied a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The BOK said a separate index gauging the people’s sentiments toward the current economic conditions came to 93, the highest since December 2010 when the index stood at 95.

An index measuring the public’s feelings toward economic conditions in the next six months stood at 112. This is the highest reading tallied since January 2010 when the index hit 116, according to the BOK.

People‘s perceptions of employment improved, with an index measuring sentiments toward job opportunities rising to a record high of 121, according to the BOK.

The monthly index is based on a survey of 2,029 households throughout the country from June 13 to 20.
