[THE INVESTOR] WASHINGTON DC -- President Moon Jae-in kicked off his five-day trip to the US on June 29 stressing the importance of the Korea-US alliance, and his intentions to work closely with US President Donald Trump.

In a move seemingly designed to put to rest concerns for the alliance often raised by conservative opposition parties, Moon chose the recently unveiled monument of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Quantico, Virginia as his first stop.

In his speech, Moon said that “Korea-US alliance was forged in the fires of war,” and that its meaning and integrity was greater than “promises made with signatures on pieces of paper.”

“(I) will move forward with President Trump. From the foundations of the great Korea-US alliance, (the two countries) will bring about the end of North Korean nuclear program and peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

The battle, also known as Changjin Lake Campaign was fought mainly by US forces against overwhelming numbers of Chinese troops in the winter of 1950. The battle was one of the fiercest engagements of the 1950-53 Korean War, and considered a

The battle also enabled the evacuation of tens of thousands of refugees, Moon’s parents among them, from Hungnam.

In the evacuation, about 200,000 soldiers and troops were moved out of the port city. In the operation, US merchant marine ship SS Meredith Victory credited for the largest rescue mission by a single vessel, having carried more than 14,000 refugees to the South.

Referring to the evacuation of Hungnam as “the most humanitarian operation in history of civilization,” Moon thanked US military officials, veterans and their families attending the ceremony.

Moon recited his family’s connection to the battle, retelling the story of his parents’ being among the evacuees, and his birth in South Korea two years after the event.

“Beyond my personal and familial history, I am moved by the humanism of the American soldiers, who rescued so many refugees from North Korea,” Moon said.

“This is the reason why Changjin Lake Campaign, and evacuation of Hungnam is the greatest victory in the world’s history of warfare.”

Moon went onto relay his mother’s story of US troops handing out candies on December 24, 1950 to the evacuees aboard the ship, and said that he has always felt grateful for the soldiers’ warmhearted actions.

“Korea remembers the sacrifice and dedication of you and your parents. The memory of gratitude and respect will live on forever,” Moon said.
