[THE INVESTOR] KT, the nation’s second largest mobile carrier, is partnering with US EV maker Tesla for connected car technology in Korea.

“We are working with Tesla for connected cars,” a KT spokesperson told The Investor. “But we are unable to give further details,” he said, adding discussions are still underway.

Earlier on June 28, a local daily reported KT and Tesla recently signed a deal for connected car technology. Under the agreement, KT will provide network services for Tesla’s electric vehicles, as well as develop telematics technology, citing industry sources.

Telematics technology refers to the combination of computer and communications technology for vehicles, allowing in-car internet services for navigation and entertainment, among others, as well as gather traffic information.

Tesla, which began delivering Model S 90D in the local market, is expected to provide a variety of services incorporating KT’s broad network in its future car offerings.

According to industry sources, KT’s telematics service will be launched in Tesla’s Model X and Model 3, which are expected to hit the Korean market next year.

Since last year, Tesla has been in talks with local carriers, including industry leader SK Telecom and KT, before choosing KT as its final choice.

Tesla Korea was unavailable for comment on the story.
