[THE INVESTOR] Sales of Thai eggs are expected to start later this month as the first batch of some 320,000 eggs arrived in Korea on July 2.

The Korean government said sanitary inspection will take 22 days at the longest, adding that the Thai eggs will be sold first to small bakeries and restaurants, not for the general public.

The price will range from 4,500 won (US$3.93) to 6,000 won for a carton of 30 eggs, almost half the price of Korean eggs sold at about 10,000 won.

Amid the rampant bird flu at local firms, the government started importing eggs from the US and other European countries for the first time in January. But the shipments have been suspended now due to bird flu outbreaks in the US and Spain.

Then the government turned to Thailand, saying it would import 2.3 million eggs per week. But the plans had been delayed due to stalled talks with the Thai government on sanitary requirements.

Currently, Korea imports eggs from six countries, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Denmark.
