[THE INVESTOR] LG Display President Yeo Sang-deok on July 18 confirmed the supply of LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics, dismissing rumors that their rare partnership has been terminated.

“Our LCD supply to Samsung is on track,” Yeo told reporters at an industry meeting in Seoul, adding that the shipments could start soon.

“The two firms have also decided to expand partnership in the near future.”

LG Electronics' high-end OLED TV

Right after Japan’s Sharp abruptly stopped supplying LCD panels for Samsung TVs in December, the Korean tech giant sought help from its crosstown rival LG Display to fill the gap.

Despite high expectations toward a tie-up of the nation’s big two tech firms, the shipments have been delayed reportedly due to differences in deal conditions. Sources say the two firms that use different TV manufacturing technologies are urging each other to adjust production facilities and pay the costs.

“LG Display has no reason to pay additional costs for supplies to Samsung considering it is already producing at full capacity to meet the soaring demand from TV makers following Sharp’s supply halt,” an industry source told The Investor on condition of anonymity.

Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics, has been reducing its own LCD production to pour more resources into OLED panels whose demand is soaring for smartphones and other mobile devices.
