[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics announced on July 19 that it has launched the English version of its artificial intelligence service Bixby for Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in US and Korea.

Bixby’s English version can be used to activate more than 10 applications on its smartphone, including the camera, internet and calculator. Bixby is also programmed to answer not only knowledge-based questions, but also abstract questions in collaboration with Google search engine system.

“We want to offer a truly multimodal experience, so that users can interact with their phones in many different ways -- through sight, touch, typing or voice -- all of the most natural ways to interact,” said Rhee In-jong, Samsung Mobile’s chief technology officer.

The company initially planned to launch the English version in May when it rolled out the Korean language Bixby. The plan, however, was delayed largely due to the lack of resources such as data and experts specializing in foreign languages.

Users of Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus devices can immediately start using Bixby by simply updating their phone’s software to the latest version. The service can also be initiated by users saying, “Hi, Bixby.” In the US, users can also start the program by pressing a separate button on the left side of their phones.

Korean users have to manually change the language setting of both the Bixby software and their phones to English to run the service smoothly, the company explained. Samsung plans to add more languages in the future.

The Korean language version of Bixby has completed over 150 million voice commands and touts a user base of over 1 million.
