[THE INVESTOR] Coway, a local household rental company, plans to join hands with Amazon to develop a premium water purifier equipped with artificial intelligence technology, according to news reports on July 21.

Coway plans to adopt the technology and platform of Alexa, the AI assistant of Amazon, for the product. It is expected to reveal its latest product next January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“This time, we plan to produce a water purifier that enables interactive communication,” Coway Chairman Lee Hae-Sun told the local media.

At the 2017 International Home & Housewares Show held in Chicago in March, Coway exhibited its first AI air purifier Airmega 400S, which was also co-developed with Amazon. Coway’s air purifier sales in the US grew 20 percent after it launched the Airmega 400S. After seeing the results, the firm now plans to adopt AI technology for other household products such as mattresses.

Reflecting its efforts to develop future products, Coway’s sales in the first quarter rose 10 percent on-year to 610.2 billion won (US$545.06), while its operating profit surged 70 percent to 120.9 billion won.

Coway was established in Korea in 1989 and became a leader in the industry producing products such as water purifiers, air purifiers and kitchen appliances.
