[THE INVESTOR] Korean chipmaker SK hynix said on July 25 that it earned 3.05 trillion won (US$2.72 billion) operating profit in the April-June period, an all-time high, with its revenue also reaching a record 6.69 trillion won.

The chip manufacturer contributed the continuing favorable market conditions, such as increasing memory chip prices and high demand, to the robust results.

The quarterly operating profit and revenue increased 24 percent and 6 percent, respectively, compared to the previous quarter.

DRAM shipment, based on the smallest data unit bit, increased 3 percent and the average selling price rose 11 percent during the period thanks to strong demand in the sever sector.

The bit shipment for NAND flash memory, declined 6 percent, but the average selling price rose 8 percent.

“The company will put more focus on chip businesses for servers and smartphones in the latter half while trying to expand its presence in the high-end chip segment,” an official from the chipmaker said.

It plans to mass-produce 1x nanometer DRAM chips in the second half. Chip companies use the letters x, y, and z to describe the scale of the chip with the three representing high-, mid-, and low-single digits, respectively.

It also plans to manufacturer 3-D NAND flash chips at its M14 plant in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, and to supply solid state drives and mobile chips utilizing 72-layer 3-D NAND flash memory chips.
