[THE INVESTOR] Korean biotech firm Cellumed said on July 28 that it has filed a patent application for a new substance for developing longer lasting dermal fillers that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume on forehead, cheeks and lips.

According to the firm, the new material is designed to stay longer in the skin compared to other filler products that are typically absorbed by the body in six months after treatment. If the company manages to develop a filler product with the new substance, it would help cut the costs for patients, according to industry watchers.

“The new substance is evaluated as having a wide applicability. We will also seek to develop it as a muscular skeletal disease therapy,” said an official at the firm.

The global facial injectable market was valued at US$6.5 billion in 2016 and is growing at an 11.5 percent annual growth rate.
