[THE INVESTOR] South Korea’s largest e-commerce firm, Coupang, announced on Aug. 10 that it had completed transferring its entire e-commerce service to its cloud server.

Coupang, which currently has 700 micro services and 25 million members, will become the first company in the nation to transfer a service platform of this magnitude to a cloud computing infrastructure. Coupang officials said they expected the transition to cloud computing to enhance its data accessing mechanism by increasing the efficiency and reliability of storing and processing data.

They said Coupang was able to complete the transition in just three months with a prep-time of less than a year due to its “micro-service architecture,” which allowed Coupang to make the transfer without completely overhauling its system.

“Since the completion of the micro-service architecture in 2015, Coupang was able to create a distributed platform and complete the transition to the cloud server without interruptions. With the cloud-based scalability and real-time data processing platform, we plan to continue to innovating and improving customer experience by upgrading machine learning and AI,” said Yoon Ju-sun, the senior director responsible for the system platform.
