[THE INVESTOR] Former executives of Audi Volkswagen Korea, who are currently on trial for emissions-rigging, on Aug. 14 were indicted on new charges that they misled consumers by running false advertisements about VW vehicles in the country.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office said they have brought additional charges against former VW Korea head Park Dong-hoon and former Audi Korea Trevor Hill for deceptive advertising, in addition to several charges that are already in place over the carmaker’s emissions-rigging scandal. The prosecutors also brought the new charges against the local unit of Audi VW.

The prosecution said Audi VW Korea, from July 2011 to August 2013, advertised that its vehicles run on “clean diesel” engine with low emissions that are environmentally friendly. These claims were later found to be false when the German carmaker was revealed to have manipulated the software of its diesel cars to cheat on emissions tests.

In January this year, the Korean prosecution indicted seven former and incumbent Audi VW officials, including Hill and Park, as well as the local unit of Audi VW, for manipulating emissions test documents for diesel vehicles and violating the Clean Air Conservation Act. The first hearing of the case was held in July.

Park is currently head of Renault Samsung Motors. He headed VW Korea from 2005 to 2013.
