[THE INVESTOR] US auto giant General Motors revealed on Aug. 31 that some of its Chevrolet Bolt EVs are experiencing battery glitches.

GM had recently notified some 100 buyers of its flagship EV warning them of a battery problem that could cause the car to suddenly lose power without warning. It explained the defect is due to malfunction of one or more battery cells, produced by LG Chem, that could deliver the remaining range incorrectly.

Fewer than 1 percent of 10,000 Bolt EVs sold to date are subject to the problem, according to the carmaker, adding it will carry out necessary repair and exchange free of charge.

In Korea, about 400 Bolt EVs have been sold since its debut in March. According to media reports, the EVs sold here do not suffer from a similar problem as the defect is present in earlier Bolt models that were built in 2016, which are sold mainly in several US states, such as California and Oregon.

GM Korea officials were not immediately available to comment on the matter.

The Bolt is the first full electric car released in Korea to deliver 383 kilometers on a single charge, outpacing its local rivals such as Hyundai Motor. The car is priced at 47.79 million won (US$42,402) but the final price hovers around 22 million after various government subsidies. GM Korea said it is seeking ways to secure more Bolt EVs from the US headquarters to meet the popular demand here.
