[THE INVESTOR] McDonald’s on Sept. 2 announced that it will stop selling its bulgogi burgers, after seven elementary school students and a teacher became sick in Jeonju, South Jeolla Province.

The eight people ate the Korea-only menu using soy-sauce marinated beef and got sick from gastroenteritis on Aug. 25. They filed a complaint three days later, following which the nation’s health authorities launched a probe.

“We are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. We have halted sales of bulgogi burger as a preemptive measure,” a company spokesperson told The Investor on Sept. 4.

The decision comes amid growing safety concerns over the US hamburger chain here. In early July, a woman filed a suit claiming her four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Hemolytic uremic syndrome, more commonly known as hamburger disease, after eating at a McDonald’s outlet in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. Four more people have also filed similar suits.
