[THE INVESTOR] Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Korea, the local unit of the Italian-American carmaker, on Sept. 29 denied speculations that it will end sales of Fiat and Chrysler brands here.

Local media outlets have reported that the multinational carmaker is mulling to pull out Fiat and Chrysler cars from the country as early as next year following poor sales, and will only sell Jeep cars that make up most of its sales.

“It is true that FCA has been focusing on the Jeep brand globally,” a spokesperson from FCA Korea told The Investor. “But no decision has been taken regarding the Chrysler and Fiat cars. We will continue to sell them in Korea.”

Chrysler sells only two cars Grand Voyager SUV and 300C large sedan in Korea. Car sales peaked in 2014 with 1,082 unit sales but plunged to 492 last year. This year only 128 Chrysler cars were sold up until August.

Fiat, which reentered the Korean market in 2013, saw its sales reach 1,163 units in 2014, but the figure halved to 658 last year. This year, Fiat has sold 980 units until August, but most of the sales were thanks to big price cuts to clear out inventory of last year’s models.

FCA Korea said it will focus on selling popular Jeep cars here. Meanwhile, it hopes to expand the lineup of Chrysler and Fiat models, as well as introduce different brands under the FCA umbrella to boost sales.
