[THE INVESTOR] American luxury brand Cadillac on Oct. 10 said that it sold 216 units in Korea in September, registering a 21-year-high since the carmaker’s debut in 1996.

GM Korea, the local importer and distributor of Cadillac cars, reported a 71 percent rise on-year in September, thanks to the popularity of its flagship CT6 large sedan.

The luxury marque sold 92 units of CT6 last month, up 164 percent from the previous month. It sold 40 units of CTS midsize sedan, followed by 37 units of XT5 crossover, 35 units of ATS sedan and 12 units of Escalade SUV.

“We were able to renew (the monthly) record twice this year, thanks to consumers who identified with the transformation of Cadillac,” Kim Young-sik, president of GM Korea, said in a statement. “The Cadillac’s innovation has just begun. We will provide many opportunities for people to experience the Cadillac’s American luxury spirit in various ways.”

From January to September, the carmaker sold a combined 1,375 units here, up 189 percent from the previous year. It is expected to break the 2,000 annual sales target this year. The feat is largely attributed to strong orders of flagship models ATS sedan and CT6 large sedan, as well as the 2012 US-Korea Free Trade Agreement, with tariffs on US carmakers reduced from 8 percent to 4 percent.
