[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics on Nov. 22 announced modest organizational changes as part of its recent year-end executive reshuffle.

Unlike earlier market speculations that the Korean tech giant could combine other parts-making sister firms such as Samsung SDI, the company said it will maintain the current three unit system consisting of home appliance, smartphone and chip businesses.

Instead, the company has combined two software development centers into one called Samsung Research and set up a new affiliate under the center solely dedicated to developing artificial intelligence technology.

Former vice chief of its software center Cho Seung-hwan will led Samsung Research, while Lee Keun-bae, former AI research leader, will lead the AI team.

Samsung said Silicon Valley-based Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center that has been leading M&A deals under the leadership of the Seoul headquarters’ chip business division, will become an independent unit and continue to be led by the current chief Young Sohn who also serves as board chairman of Harman International that Samsung acquire last year for US$8 billion.

Following President Kim Ki-nam’s promotion to CEO who oversees the chip business unit late last month, other top posts at the division were also named on the day. Executive Vice President Park Chan-hoon will be in charge of overseeing the semiconductor division’s manufacturing complex in Giheung, Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek while Executive Vice President Hwang Seong-woo will serve as a vice chief of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology.

In the meantime, Baek Soo-hyun, vice president, will lead Samsung’s communications team after his predecessor Lee In-yong’s resignation early this month.
