[THE INVESTOR] Cargo processed at Korean seaports dropped 7.1 percent last month from a year earlier, government data showed on Nov. 28.

The total amount of seaport cargo stood at 122.6 million tons in October, down from 125.1 million tons tallied a year earlier, according to the data by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The ministry attributed the decline to the shorter working days during Chuseok holiday, which fell on the first week of October.

Shipments of coal and automobiles rose 2.7 percent and 2 percent, respectively, while traffic of sand tumbled 81.3 percent over the cited period, the ministry noted.

Non-container cargo fell 10 percent on-year to 84.2 million tons last month, and container freight inched up 0.1 percent to 2.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units.

A total of 1.3 million TEUs of export-import cargo was handled by the country‘s ports over the same period, down 4 percent from the previous year.
