[THE INVESTOR] Mercedes-Benz Korea stated on Dec. 14 that it is discussing with the Transport Ministry to voluntarily recall 32,000 vehicles equipped with Takata air bags.

The carmaker plans to submit a recall plan to the ministry and proceed with the recall after approval. Although the sales of Takata air bags in Korea have increased significantly, domestic customers are not too happy considering a large-scale recall in China.

The ministry said that among the vehicles sold in Korea by Mercedes-Benz, Takata air bags were installed in 32,000 cars including C-class, GLK and E-class cars produced from 2007 to 2012. At least 20 people were killed and more than 200 injured in the US, Malaysia, and Australia due to defects in the air bags.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is expected to become the top-selling brand of sport utility vehicles in the imported car market this year. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association, its cumulative sales of SUVs between January and November totaled 13,955 units, which has surpassed last year’s record of 8,919. Up until November, the German carmaker has sold 1,756 SUVs more than second-ranked Land Rover’s 9,639 units.
